Today, the Minister of the Interior, Hanno Pevkur decided to appoint Katri Raik, current Director of the University of Tartu Narva College, as the new Rector of the Academy of Security Sciences. Raik will assume the position in June, when the current Rector, Lauri Tabur, will have completed his five‑year term of office.

“We expect that the new Rector will advance the Academy of Security Sciences and respond to the challenges arising from the changed security situation. Katri Raik’s vision for running the Academy addressed these future needs most appropriately,” commented the Minister of the Interior, Hanno Pevkur. Raik also stood out for her considerable public sector management experience and a history of having built and developed an institution of professional higher education.

“This is a great and serious challenge and I promise to give it my all,” said the future Rector Raik. “Studying in the Academy of Security Sciences must provide a solid foundation for a good career, and this requires good cooperation with employers and diverse development opportunities for the students: the demands facing an internal security specialist today are far greater than just physical fitness and knowing the law.”

Raik has been Head of the University of Tartu Narva College for 15 years, with a two‑year break as Deputy Secretary General in the Ministry of Education and Research. She holds a PhD in history and has been awarded the Order of the White Star (3rd Class) as well as the title Woman of the Year 2013.

A total of nine people ran for Rector of the Academy of Security Sciences. The first selection was made by the Rector’s selection committee and the Minister of the Interior made the final choice between two finalists.
