In connection with the legal status of Europol changing, the presidency called the ministers to discuss issues related to the future of Europol. Estonia still sees a need to develop Europol as the main channel of EU cross-border cooperation in the fight against crime.

“Due to that we support the measures intended for increasing the efficiency of the agency’s work, which were prescribed already in the Hague programme,” said Marko Pomerants. “Information technological and analytical support also plays a great role in cooperation between countries and should be the cornerstone in the fight against organised crime,” he added.

The ministers also discussed how to better use the resources in the existing EU agencies in order to ensure security in a more efficient manner. According to the Minister of the Interior Marko Pomerants agencies should plan mutual cooperation at as early a stage as possible and involve representatives of the home country at the right moment.
