Latvia establishes temporary border control in connection with NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Spring Session
In connection with NATO Parliamentary Assembly’s Spring Session that will take place in Riga from 28 May to 1 June 2010, Latvia will establish a temporary border control at Schengen internal borders for security reasons.
In the period from 24 May to 1 June, border controls will be carried out at all Latvian points of entry at land, air and water frontier with the countries that have signed the Schengen Agreement, including Estonia.
Latvia has declared that the control measures will not be wholly implemented everywhere, but in a flexible manner as occasion requires.
According to Schengen Borders Code, member states have a right to establish temporary border control at internal borders, in order to avoid serious threats to their public policy or internal security.
In 1955, the North Atlantic Assembly was founded within NATO and was renamed the NATO Parliamentary Assembly which headquarters are located in Brussels.
