Press release no. 133

This morning, 31 August, Interior Minister Kalle Laanet discussed the creation of elementary hygiene conditions for truck drivers waiting to cross the border at Koidula with Põlva County Governor Urmas Klaas.

"I'm happy that the discussions with the governor and police prefecture of Ida-Viru County brought about a swift resolution and the conditions for truck drivers at the Narva border crossing have now eased somewhat," the Minister said. "They are also facing 24-hour waits at the Koidula crossing. I discussed the ways in which we can also ensure basic hygiene provisions for the truck drivers there with Põlva County governor Urmas Klaas this morning."

T
his morning at the Narva border crossing there was a queue of 260 vehicles, while there were 90 at Koidula and 35 at Luhamaa. The queue is moving most quickly at Luhamaa, where vehicles are managing to cross the border in less than a day. However, vehicles at the Koidula crossing are having to wait up to 24 hours and those at Narva as much as 48 hours.

On Thursday 30 August Ida-Viru County Governor Ago Silde oversaw the installation of toilets and cisterns for the truck drivers waiting in the Narva border crossing queue. Eastern Police Prefect Kalev Prillop was given the task by the Ministry of the Interior to ensure traffic safety in the area of the border queue. The police yesterday marked the area with signs and order is being maintained on site by police patrols.
